সয়া সসের জন্ম নিয়ে নানা গল্প আছে। সবচেয়ে গ্রহণযোগ্য গল্পটা বলি। প্রায় দুই হাজার বছর আগে হানদের শাসনামলে চীনা ভিক্ষুরা ঠিক করলেন, তাঁরা আর আমিষ খাবেন না। সবাই নিরামিষভোজী হয়ে যাবেন। সেই সময় আমিষ স্পর্শ না করেও যাতে স্বাস্থ্যকর জীবন যাপন করা যায়, এ জন্য আমিষের বিকল্প নিরামিষ খোঁজা শুরু হলো। তখন বিশ্ব টফু (সয়াবিনের দুধ দিয়ে বানানো কার্ড ভাজা), সয়া দুধ, সয়া পনির, সয়া সস—এগুলোর সঙ্গে পরিচিত হয়েছিল। এখন তো বাংলাদেশেও সয়াবিনের নাগেট বা বড়ি ব্যাপক জনপ্রিয়।
